Chapter 34 Flashcards
blood
circulating, connective tissue
capillary bed
required for slow down of blood
pulmonary circuit
- right half pumps oxygen-poor blood to lungs
- freshly oxygenated blood flows to hearts left half
lymphatic system
incl. drainage vessels that pick up xs interstitial fluid & reclaimable solutes, returning them to the circulatory system
blood properties
- plasma: 90% water, transport medium for blood cells and platelets
- red blood cells: erythrocytes, transport O2 away from CO2 waste, oxygenated bright red
- white blood cells: leukocytes, from bone marrow’s stem cells, house keeping, defense
- platelets: cytoplasmic fragments (shed by stem cells) wrapped in plasma membrane; 5-9 days
anemia
too few red blood cells
agglutination
proteins (called antibodies) act against foreign cells and clump together
blood type
Blood Flow Order
- artery
- arteriole (guide blood flow under nervous/endo. systems)
- capillary (diffusion & exchange, missing smooth muscle rings and outer coat)
- venule
- vein
jugular veins
receive blood from brain & head tissue
superior vena cava
receives blood from upper body blood
pulmonary veins/arteries
oxygen rich/poor blood for lungs to/from heart
hepatic portal vein
delivers nutrient-rich blood from intestine to liver
inferior vena cava
receives blood from veins below
iliac artery/vein
carries blood to/from pelvic organs
