Chapter 33 - The Nervous System Flashcards
Central nervous system (CNS)
Brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system (PNS)
Vast network of nerves - carry messages between body and CNS
Neuron
Nerve cell
Sensory neuron (afferent)
Takes a message from a sense organ to CNS
Motor neuron (efferent)
Takes a message from the CNS to a muscle gland
Ganglion
A group of cell bodies located outside the CNS
Interneuron
Carries information between sensory and motor neurons
Threshold
The minimum stimulus needed to cause an impulse to be carried in a neuron
The ‘all or nothing’ law
If the threshold is reached an impulse carried, but if the threshold is not reached no impulse is carried
Refractory period
A short time span after a neuron has carried an impulse during which a stimulus fails to cause a response
Synapse
A region where two neurons come into close contact
Synaptic cleft
The tiny gap between the two neurons at a synapse
Reflex action
An automatic, involuntary, unthinking response to a stimulus
Reflex arc
The pathway taken by a nerve impulse in a reflex action
