Chapter 14 - Cell Division Flashcards
cell continuity
all cells develop from pre-existing cells
chromosomes
coiled threads of DNA (which forms genes) and protein that become visible in the nucleus at cell division
gene
section of DNA that codes for a protein
haploid cell
has one set of chromosomes
diploid cell
has two sets of chromosomes i.e. chromosomes are in pairs
homologous pair
two chromosomes of similar size with the same sequence of genes
cell cycle
changes that take place in a cell during the period between one cell devision and the next
interphase
the phase in the cell cycle when the cell is not dividing
mitosis
a form of nuclear division in which one nucleus divides to form two identical daughter nuclei
cancer
a group of disorders in which certain cells lose their ability to control the rate of mitosis and the number of times mitosis takes place
meiosis
a form of nuclear division in which the four daughter nuclei contain half the chromosome number of the parent nucleus
centromere
point at which the chromosomes are attached in a double stranded chromosome
