Chapter 32 Obstetric and Gynecological Emergencies Flashcards
Labia
Soft tissues that protect the entrance to the vagina
Perineum
The surface area between the vagina and anus
Mons pubis
Soft tissue that covers the pubic symphysis; area where hair grows when a woman reaches puberty
Vagina is
The brith canal
Ovary/ovaries
The female reproductive organ that produces
Ova or ovum means egg
Fallopian tube also called the oviducts
The narrow tube that connects the ovary to the uterus - also called the oviduct
Uterus
The muscular abdominal organ where the fetus develops; the womb
Cervix
The neck of the uterus at the entrance to the birth canal
Ovulation
The phase of the female reproductive cycle in which an ovum is released from the ovary
Embryo
The baby from fertilization to 8 weeks of development
Fetus
The baby from 8 weeks of development
Peristalsis
Waves of muscular contraction
Usually happens when Fallopian tubes move egg toward the uterus
How much blood is lost through menstruation
Typically totaling around 50mL, for roughly 3-5 days
A typical pregnancy lasts how long?
Lasts about 40 weeks
Fetus will develop over the next?
32 weeks
Nine months of pregnancy are divided into 3 month periods called trimesters
First trimester
- fetus is being formed
- little uterus growth
Second trimester
- after the third, uterus grows rapidly
- by the 5 month, reaching the umbilicus (navel)
- reaching the epigastrium (upper abdomen) by the seventh month
- placenta develops in uterus
Placenta
The organ of pregnancy when exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and wastes occur between a mother and fetus
- attached to the wall of the uterus
- expelled after baby is born
Umbilical ford
The fetal structure containing the blood vessels that carry blood to and from the placenta
- about 1 in wide and 22in long
- fully expelled after birth
Amniotic sac
A thin membranous “bag of waters” that surrounds the developing fetus
- protects the fetus acting as a cushion for minor injuries
- sac contains almost one quart of liquid called amniotic fluid
- maintains a constant fetal body temp.
Abortion
Spontaneous (miscarriage or induced termination of pregnancy
Abruptio placentae
A condition in which the placenta separates from the uterine wall; a cause of prebirth bleeding
Afterbirth
The placenta, membranes or the amniotic sac, part of the umbilical cord, and some tissues from the lining of the uterus that are delivered after the birth of the baby
Braxton Hicks contractions
Irregular prelabor contractions of the uterus
Breech presentation
When the baby’s buttocks or both legs appear first during birth
Cephalic
When the baby appears headfirst during birth. This is the normal presentation
Crowning
When part of the baby is visible through the vaginal opening
Eclampsia
A severe complication of pregnancy that produces seizures and coma
Ectopic pregnancy
When implantation of the fertilized egg is not in the body of the uterus, occurring instead in the Fallopian tube (oviduct), cervix, or abdominopelvic cavity
