Allergic reaction

Allergen
Something that causes an allergic reaction
Anaphylaxis
A severe or life-threatening allergic reaction in which the blood vessels dilate, causing a drop in blood pressure, and the tissues lining the respiratory systems swell, interfering with the airway. Also called anaphylactic shock
Hives
Red, itchy, possibly raised blotches on the skin that often result from allergic reaction
To be considered a severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis shock
The patient must have either respiratory distress or signs and symptoms of shock
Auto – injector
Hey syringe preloaded with medication that has a spring loaded device that pushes the needle through the skin when the tip of the device is pressed firmly against a body
Epinephrine Administration
If patient has prescribed epinephrine autoinjector and is in anaphylactic shock, contact medical direction and if so ordered assist patient with administration of epinephrine
- recess every two minutes after epinephrine is administered
Patient does not have epinephrine autoinjector perform care for shock and transport the patient immediately
- give epinephrine only two patients who have been prescribed auto injectors by their physicians
- When administering epinephrine autoinjector make sure that liquid is clear, remove cap and press injector firmly against patients thigh, between waist and knee outside of thigh

Epinephrine autoinjector sizes
Adult dose of 0.3 MG
Child dose of 0.15 MG for a child weighing less than 66 pounds
