Chapter 3 The works of Streams Flashcards
What is Erosion?
When streams lift loose particles by abrasion, grinding, and by dissolving soluble materials in their channels.
What is a Bedload?
When solid material too big to carry in suspension for stream.
What is the Capacity of a stream?
Maximum load it can carry.
When does deposition occurs?
Occurs as streamflow has no energy, it stops at area and creates the “end” of streamflow.
What are the deposits of deposition called?
Alluvium
What are Deltas?
Accumulation of sediment formed where stream enter lake/ocean.
What is natural levee?
The sides of a river that contains its water (except when there is a flood).
What are Narrow Valleys?
V-shape valley that shows how stream has been downcutting towards base level.
What features does Narrow Valleys include?
Rapids
Waterfalls
What are Wide Valleys?
Streams near base level
(downward erosion less dominant)
(Stream energy directed from side to side)
What is Floodplain?
Flat, low-lying portion of stream valley that will flood at times.
What are wide valley’s features?
Meanders
Cutoffs
Oxbow lakes
When does a flood occur?
When river water too much, it goes out of river and cause overflow.
How to control flood?
Artificial levees
flood control dams
placing limits on floodplain development
What is a drainage basin/watershed?
Land area that contributes water to stream.
