Chapter 1 & 2 Part 1 Essentials of Geography Flashcards
What does “geography” mean?
Geo = Earth
Graphein = to write
What is Geography?
A method, not a body of knowledge, holistic (a whole body of info, not a division of it), and eclectic (composed of elements drawn from other sources).
What is Spatial Analysis?
The examination of spartial interactions, pattern, and variation over an area/space. This is used by geographers.
What is Spatial?
Character of a physical space/area.
What is the science of Geography?
Geography is a science that studies the interdependence of:
Geographic areas
Places and locations
Natural systems
Process
And societal/cultural activities over earth’s surface
What does physical Geography involve?
Spatial analysis of Earth’s physical environment.
What words relate to spatial analysis?
Space, territory, zone, pattern, distribution, place, location, region, shere, province, and distance.
What are the examples of Geographic topics?
Spatial patterns of Earth’s weather, climate, winds, ocean currents, topography, and terrestrial biomes.
What are the 5 Geographic themes?
Location, region, human-earth relationship, place, and movement.
Who set fort the 5 keys for modern geographic education?
The Association of American Geographers (AAG) and the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE).
What is location?
Either absolute or relative location, location answer the question “where?”
What is region?
Portion of Earth’s surface with uniform characteristics; how they relate to other regions.
What is Human - Earth’s Relationship?
Humans and the environment: resource, exploitation, hazard perception, and environmental modification - the oldest theme of Geography inquiry.
What is place?
Characteristics that make each area unique (realistic or spiritual).
What is movement?
Communication, movement, circulation, and diffusion across Earth’s surface. Global interdependence links all regions and places - both physical and human systems.
What does Geography study the relationship of?
natural systems
geographic areas
society
cultural activities
and the interdependence of all of these “over space”
What is system theory?
A system of methodology that is used as an analytic tool by geographers.
What is a system?
Any ordered, interrelated set of things and their attributes, linked by flows of energy and matter, as distinct from the surrounding environment outside of the system.
What is open system?
A system with inputs and outputs crossing back and forth between the systems and the surrounding environment.
What is a closed system?
A system that is shut off from the surrounding environment so that is entirely self constrained in terms of energy and materials.
What are Earth’s 4 spheres?
Atmosphere (Air), hydrosphere (water), lithosphere (ground and a part of the Earth’s crust), and biosphere (The living environment and creatures around us; each first 3 spheres creates biosphere).
