Chapter 3 Rock Cycle Flashcards
What are the 3 types of rocks?
Igneous (Ignite, Molten, Heated)
Sedimentary (Smol pieces, Particles)
Metamorphic (Refined, Cleaned, Smooth)
What is the Rock Cycle?
Igneous, Sediment, and Metamorphic turning into one another (ie: sediment turns into metamorphic or igneous, vice versa, etc). Happens through heat, pressure, and/or weathering
How does Igneous become Sediment or Metamorphic?
Igneous to Sediment: Stones weather, falls into lake, then pressure take smol bits and molds them together.
Igneous to Metamorphic: Rocc gets buried underground then heat and pressure turns it into metamorphic.
How does Igneous become Sediment or Metamorphic?
Igneous to Sediment: Stones weather, falls into lake, then pressure take smol bits and molds them together.
Igneous to Metamorphic: Rocc gets buried underground then heat and pressure turns it into metamorphic.
How does Sediment become Igneous or Metamorphic?
Sediment to Igneous: rocc go underground, rocc become hot and pressured, rocc become magma, boom igneous
Sediment to Metamorphic: rocc stays underground, rocc has hot and pressure AROUND it, rocc become clean, nice, and very shiny, boom metamorphic
How does Metamorphic become Igneous or Sediment?
Meta to Igneous: Rocc go underground, heat and pressure goes around Rocc, Rocc cools and becomes Igneous
Meta to Sediment: Rocc go brr and erodes, rocks stay at bottom of ocean, pressure takes smol rocc and fuses them together.
What are Igneous Rocks? What if they are underground/above ground?
Cooling and Solidification of molten rocc (or spicy pebbles)
If Underground: Magma
If Above Ground: Lava
Examples: Granite, Basalt, Pumice, Minecraft Obsidian
What are Sedimentary Rocks? Give some examples on how its made
Composed of particles of small rocks (like gravel, sand, silt, and or clay)
Pressure and Cementing process makes rocks form
Examples: Sand to Sandstone | Silt & Clay to Shale and Siltstone | Organic materials to limestone or coal.
What are Metamorphic Rocks? How is it made?
Formed from Igneous or Sediment through heat, pressure, or chemical reactions
Shale to Slate
Limestone to Marble
Granite to Gneiss
What classification do rocks have to make certain minerals?
Igneous: Intrusive and Extrusive
Sedimentary: Clastic, Chemical, Biologic
Metamorphic: Foliated and Non-foliated
