Chapter 1 & 2 Part 3 Essentials of Geography Flashcards
What are the 4 types of Map Projections?
Bonus: What is a Globe?
Cylindrical, Planar, Conic, and Oval
Bonus Answer: Its a representation of: Distance, Direction, Area, Shape, and Proximity
What is Remote Sensing?
Installed in satellites. It sees what our eyes cannot. It is satellites able to remotely gain information by sensing a distant subject without physical contact.
What are the two types of Remote Sensing (RS)?
Active RS: Like a Radar, a satellite it strikes energy at a surface to analyze it as its reflected back to the satellite. (ex: Radio Detection and Ranging)
Passive RS: Records light from the surface that our eyes can normally see (ie: recording the light rays of the sun bouncing back to our eyes) (ex: Infrared Sensors)
What is a Geographic Information Systems (GIS)?
Bonus: What two features does it have?
Combines spatial and attribute data (ie: Where and what something is)
Bonus: Physical and Cultural Features
What two ways does geography affect us?
Bonus: What are some geographic tech we use everyday?
Natural and Human Environment
Bonus: Earth Observation, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
What are some examples of observation devices?
SPOT, Landsat, RadarSAT, NOAA, ERS
What does a GIS software do?
They take a locations data and attribute data to show a listing of what’s happening in certain areas
Example: The location of Africa (location data)
contains x number of people (attribute data)
What are 2 layers a GIS can contain?
Base Map Data (landscapes, population, road maps)
Elevation (hills, mountains, landforms)
What are the 3 softwares that GIS takes information from?
Relational Database
CAD Graphics (Computer Assisted Design)
Stats Analysis (Statistical)
What are some real world applications GIS can be used for? name like 3 idk…
Environmental
Park Management
Agriculture
Public Utilities
Health Care
Emergency 911
Real Estate
Marketing
