The basic structure of American government; power is divided between national and state governments
Federalism
The constitution limits the central government by dividing powers among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches.
Separation of powers- each branch has its responsibilities, a system the founders hoped would prevent any branch from gaining to much power.
Each branch exercises some control over the others; what are some examples?
Checks and balances; the president can check Congress by vetoing its legislation. Congress can override a veto with 2/3ds vote of each house.
The power of the courts to declare laws and actions of local, state, or national governments is invalid if the violate the constitution
Judicial Review
What did article 2 in the constitution establish?
The executive branch
Gives congress th right to make all laws “necessary and proper” to carry out the powers expressed in the other clauses
Elastic clause
What does the president do?
Commander in chief of the national guard, a appoints heads of executive department, may pardon people convicted of crime, make treaties with advice and consent of senate, appoints other ambassadors, calls congress into special session when necessary, meets with head of state, ensures that the laws of congress are faithfully executed

This was in the chamber on the main floor of the Capitol but when it wasn’t in session they had to hear appeals in faraway district courts.

What does article one in the constitution establish?
The legislative branch; it creates the US Congress
