Chapter 3: Pituitary Gland Flashcards
The Pituitary Gland is often dubbed the endocrine system’s?
Master Gland.
Why the Pituitary Gland is known as the Master Gland?
Because its hormones send signals to other endocrine glands to stimulate or inhibit their own hormone production.
What does The Pituitary Gland consist of?
An anterior lobe and posterior lobe.
What does the Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) of the Anterior Lobe do?
Stimulates the adrenal glands to produce hormones.
What does the Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) of the Anterior Lobe do?
Ensures normal functioning of ovaries and testes.
What does Growth Hormone (GH) of the Anterior Lobe do?
Aids the growth of healthy bone and muscle mass.
What does Luteinizing Hormone (GH) of the Anterior Lobe do?
Works with FSH to ensure normal functioning of ovaries and testes.
What does Prolactin of the Anterior Lobe do?
Stimulates production of breast milk after childbirth.
What does Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) of the Anterior Lobe do?
Stimulates the thyroid Gland to produce hormones.
What does Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone (MSH) of the Anterior Lobe do?
Increases the production of melanin, causing darkening of the skin pigmentation.
What does Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH) of the Posterior Lobe do?
Helps control blood pressure by prompting the kidneys to reduce the amount of water excreted.
What does Oxytocin of the Posterior Lobe do?
Contracts the uterus during childbirth and stimulates breast milk production.
