Chapter 3- Part 3 Flashcards
What has been designed to prevent musculoskeletal injuries?
Sport-specific protective equipment
How does taping and bracing joints reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries?
They improve joint stability, strength of joints and provide confidence to the athlete in their joints
Why does bracing offer greater joint stability than taping?
Braces are reusable and taping diminishes throughout the activity
What are some examples of common protective equipment?
Helmets, mouthguard, gloves, padding and guards
What is the role of mouth-guards?
They reduce cuts to the lips, mouth and tongue whilst also protecting teeth
What is the role of helmets?
To protect the brain from injury or the head from the cuts during impact
What is the role of guards?
To absorb impact and reduce the direct impact on a body part
What is the role of footwear?
To provide some protection from impact, as well as support for the foot and ankle
What is static stretching?
When a person moves a joint to its full range of motion and holds it for 10 seconds or more, such as a seated hamstring stretch
What are repetitions?
The number of times a weight will be lifted in a sequence
What is load?
The amount of weight to be lifted
What is a set?
A group of repetitions performed without rest
What is velocity?
The speed at which the weight is lifted
What is a 1RM?
The maximum weight that can be lifted in one maximal eexertion
What is a single-joint movement?
Only one joint is involved, such as a bicep curl
