Chapter 3 Module 1 Flashcards
What is the order of organization
Atoms, molecules, macromolecules, organelles, cells, tissues, organs, organisms
How many types of cells are there in the human body
About 200
What size is a cell
10-15 micrometers in diameter mostly
Plasma membrane
Made of proteins and lipids and defines cell boundaries. Governs interactions with other cells. Controls passage of materials in and out ofcells
Intracellular face vs extracellular face
Intracellular side of the plasma membrane faces the cytoplasm and extracellutar faces away
What lipids make up the plasma membrane
Lipids make up 98% of the plasma membrane. 75% of the membrane lipids are phospholipids. They have a hydrophobic and hydrophilic property and dry ft laterally to keep membrane fluid. 20% are cholesterol which hold phospholipids still and stiffen membrane. 51. Are glycolipids which are phospholipids with short carb chains on extracellular face
What proteins make up the plasma membrane
Transmembrane proteins: pass through membrane, have hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties
Peripheral proteins: adhere to face of the membrane and usually tether to the cytoskeleton
