Define jails
locally operated correctionally facilities that confine people before and after sentencing
What is a lockup? Purpose?
A very small jail with only a few cells and no food accommodations
- Hold people for only a few hours until transfer to another location
Define Sherriff
elected official who oversees policing activities within the county and jail
Regional jail
jail that serves multiple counties and is overseen my jail commission
Incarceration rate
number of people per 100,000 who are in jail or prison
Factors affecting jail populations
tough on crime policies, overcrowding, split sentence use
objective classification system
statistical approach to consider risk of escape and violence by inmates
Describe first-generation jails
linear design, cells along rows with walkway in front of cells for officers to oversee prisoners
Describe podular designs
common dayroom in center with cells surrounding the outer walls, made it easier and safer for officers to watch prisoners
Describe second generation jails
used podular design but contained secure control room overlooking cells and automatic lock doors
Describe third generation jails
no remote control center, officers are located within the housing unit with inmates
