Manhattan Bail Project
started in the 1960’s

Purposes of the PSI
use in sentencing by court, determining supervision needs during probation, in prison for classification, research
indeterminate sentences
sentences that have a minimum and maximum time to serve; decision by release authority determines actual amount served
Describe truth in sentencing
form of a determinate sentence, that required completion of 85% of the sentence before eligible for release
Describe good time
allows inmates the opportunity to reduce their eligibility for release thru good behavior

Judicial- judges are granted considerable discretion in sentencing
Administrative- discretion granted to executive branch of gov.
Legislative- discretion granted to legislative branch
