Group
Two or more people who interact, are aware of each other and think of themselves as a group
Functional groups
fulfill ongoing needs in an organization by carrying out a particular function
Task group
Set up to carry out a specific activity. Generally disband when/ if that task is completed
Formal groups
set up by management to meet organizational needs
Informal groups
Individuals within an organization that develop relationships to meet personal needs
Organic organization
Group with very little hierarchy. Members have diverse talents that are utilized in different ways, no leader
Roles
Patterns of behavior associated with an individuals position in a group
Role conflicts
a person who has 2 different roles that call for conflicting types of behavior
Norms
group standards for appropriate/ acceptable behavior
Status
A group member’s position in relation to other members of the group
Cohesiveness
Degree to which group members stick together. More cohesive groups tend to work harder and are more likely to accomplish goals
homogeneity
degree t owhich members are similar
5 stage of team development
- Forming: members become acquainted
- Storming: Period of conflict, figure out roles
- Norming: Agreement among members
- Performing: Solving organizational problems, highest productivity
- Adjourning: Disbanning of a team if/when a goal is completed
Formal meeting
Specific goal with an agenda sent to people beforehand
Informal meeting
May happen spontaneously, take place somewhere informal
