Presentation?
A
Combined nitrous oxide (50%) and oxygen (50%). Stored in medical cylinders that have a blue body and white shoulders.

Indications?
A
Moderate to severe pain.
Labour pains.

Actions?
A
Inhaled analgesic agent.

Contraindications?
A
Severe head injuries with impaired consciousness.
Deep sea diving in the last 24hrs.
Disturbed psychiatric patients.
Intra-ocular injection of gas in the last 4 weeks.
Abdominal pain where intestinal obstruction is suspected.

Cautions?
A
Patient at risk of pneumothorax

Dosage and administration?
A
Administered via a face mask or mouthpiece.
Takes about 3-5 minutes to become effective.
5-10 minutes for maximum effect to be achieved.
