chapter 3 (end) Flashcards
mothers changes after birth
- physical changes include breast produces milk, uterus become smaller, estrogen drops
- have crying spells, irritation resentment etc.
postpartum depression
- factors include high levels of hormones during 3rd trimester, depression beforehand, life stresses
- if lasts long - baby at risk for depression and behavioural issues
fundamental beliefs about childbirth
- problem free when both parents understand what is happening during pregnancy and delivery
- natural methods of dealing with pain are better and more healthy (if not can have some risks)
- involves supportive coach (friend, father, family, doula)
approaches to childbirth: natural
minimal medical or tech intervention usually using techniques such as meditation, breathing etc.
- join groups for expecting mothers helps with better natural birth
approaches to childbirth: home delivery
- done when not high risk or any complications and mother is healthy and in healthy environment
doula = someone who provides emotional and psych support and advice
approaches to childbirth: freestanding birth centre
- small independent clinics where ind assigned to birthing room decorated to look homelike
- doctor or nurse assists
- only used when births are expected to be trouble free
apgar scale
screening for infants who are at risk for physical problems and predict future development
- factors rated : heart rate, respiratory failure, muscle tone, reflex responsivity, skin colour
- 6 and lower calls for concern
brazelton neonatal assess scale
assesses small and not as noticeable behavioural aspects of a newborns condition
- includes reflexes, motor capacities, how they respond to ppl and objects
problems and complications arising from low birth weight
- premature (body weight is acc good and appropriate)
- low birth weight (more likely to die and have brain damage and physical deficits
- caused by poor nutrition, drug and alc abuse, multiple births
- full term - less than 5.8 - 34 weeks - less than 3.5-4
consequences of LBW
- very malnourished - critical period and placed in isolation in hospital
- breathing difficulties (respiratory distress syndrome
special infant stim provides benefits (kangaroo care - holding baby in burrito right after birth)
newborn reflexes general
- reflexes are involuntary
- some have important functions (sucking reflex)
- some serve as building blocks for later intermediate actions such as stepping reflex to walking (supports muscle strength and balance)
4 newborn states
- alert inactivity (awake and scoping)
- waking activity (awake but unfocused)
- crying
sleeping
infants sleep
- 16-18 hours a day (decreases with age)
- awake 1 hour sleep 3
- alternates from being still and breathing regularly to moving gently and breathing irregularly (about 50% of sleep in REM)
sudden unexpected infant death
sudden unexplainable death of apparent healthy baby
- rate decreasing but higher for indigenous ind pop
- risk factors
- child sleeping on stomach especially when other items in
crib
- parents smoking
- maternal malnutrition
sleeping arrangements for newborn
individualistic: favours separate crib for infant
collectivist: favours co sleeping
- possible attachment issues
- no multiple items on bed
