Chapter 3: composition of substance and solution Flashcards
What is the formula mass?
summing the average atomic mass of all atoms represented in the substance’s formula
What is the molar mass?
the mass in grams of 1 mole of that substance
What is percent composition?
the percentage by mass of each element in the compound
How do you solve for percent composition
percent X = mass of X/ mass of compound x 100
How do you determine the empirical formula?
mass to moles divide by small multiple til whole
How do you derive the molecular formula from the empirical formula and molar mass?
molar mass/ empirical formula mass= n
(Ax, By)n= AxnByn
In a solution what is the concentration?
the relative amount of a given solution component
In a solution what is the solvent?
compotent with a concentration that is signifcantly greater than that of all the others
What is a solution that has water as the solvent called?
an aqueous solution
What is the solute?
a component of a solution that is typically present at much lower concentrations
When something is diluted what can be inferred by the concentration?
It has a low concentration
When something is concentrated what can be inferred by the concentration?
It has a high concentration
What is molarity?
mol solute/ L solution
What is dilution?
the process by which concentration is lessened by the addition of a solvent
What is the formula for figuring out the concentration of a new solution?
C1V1=C2V2
