Freud - preconscious - def
What is immediately below the surface, not currently the subject of our attention.
Freud - unconscious - def
This is where our primitive feelings, drives, and memories reside.
Freud - ID, Ego, and Superego - Def
ID - Primitive, pleasure seeking part (sexual pleasure!)
Ego - Sense of self and acts as an intermediary between the ID and the world.
Superego - conscience, greatly influenced by our parents or caregivers moral and ethical stances.
Psychoanalytic Theory - Freud
Freud’s scientific method to relieve emotional disturbances by knowing the unconscious mind.
Transference - def
when the patient projects intense feelings onto the therapist related to unfinished work from previous relationships.
Countertransference - def
when the therapist/care giver responds by pouring feelings onto the patient.
Interpersonal Therapy - def
a hands on system in which therapists actively guide and challenge maladaptive behaviors and distorted views.
Behavior Therapy - what does it do?
Uses basic tenets from each of the behaviorists described in the chapter.
Systematic Desensitization - def
Working towards feeling better about something - in a systematic way.
Aversion therapy - def
Eradicates unwanted habits by associating unpleasant consequences with them.
Biofeedback - def
individuals can control physiological responses such as breathing rates, HR’s and BP’s.
