Abuse vs. Addiction
Abuse = just doing something that is wrong - like abusing marijuana.
Addiction - you can’t stop it!
What are the 4 C’s of addiction?
Compulsive behavior, cravings, chronic relapsing brain disorder and cognitive impairment.

Alcohol Withdrawal Timeline
Early symptoms - 7 - 48 hours after cessation. Early symptoms include intense tremors, cramps, vomiting, increased HR, BP, Grand Mal seizures, etc.
Continue for 5-7 days.

How do we handle alcohol withdrawal?
We orient them to reality. We also give meds, like Anatabuse (Disulfram, which when mixed with alcohol makes you sick) and Naltexone (which reduces the high) or Campral (which helps by reducing some of the unpleasant symptoms of abstinence.
What drug is usually given for opioid toxicity?
Narcan (Naloxene)
What is methadone used for?
Treatment of heroine and other addictions.
What is Buprenorphine (Subutex)?
It’s like methadone but doesn’t need to be administered as much.
Cocaine/Crack - what does it feel like?
You get really high then really depressed.
Even though they might be in denial, should we still talk to patients and assess their addiction?

What are some outcomes for patients suffering from an addiction?
Remain free from injury, attend programs, identify what might cause you to want to do the substance again, etc.
It cannot be stressed enough that planning care requires attention to the patient’s social status, income, cultural and ethnic background, age, gender, history, etc. T/F?
