Chapter 3 Flashcards
Empathy
Allows therapist to see the clients world
Observation Skills
Helps therapist move beyond CL’s words toward fuller understanding
Subtractive Empathy
Therapist falls short or distorts what the CL is saying
Basic/Interchangeable Empathy (Rogers says this is necessary and sufficient to produce CL change)
The therapists responses are basically interchangeable with those of the CL’s
Additive Empathy
Using empathy to bring to light deeper cognitions and emotions and understanding of behavior
Verbal Tracking
Staying with the CL’s story (don’t change the subject)
Visuals
Make eye contact with CL
Vocal Qualities
Communicate with warmth and interest in your voice
Verbal Underlining (Not one of the 3 V’s)
Watch how the CL is speaking (Stutters, Stammers, Forgetfulness, slips of the tongue)
Body language
Face the CL squarely, lean slightly forward with an expressive face, and use encouraging gestures. Smile to show warmth.
Movement Complementarity
Body language that is harmonious but may not be identical (Ex: as one person is talking, another nods in agreement)
Movement Synchrony
Unconsciously mirroring a persons body language that you are having a conversation with
Movement Dissynchrony
Discrepancies in nonverbal behavior (Ex: CL is talking about a friend and they have a tight fist, might mean that have negative feelings towards their friend)
