Ethical Standards:
1) Do no harm (nonmaleficence)
2) Confidentiality (respecting clients right to privacy)
3) Dual Relationships (CANNOT have more than 1 relationship with your client)
4) Competence (stay willing to learn to help clients)
5) Informed Consent
Dual Relationship Exceptions:
1) You are the only therapist for miles
2) You can date previous clients after 5 years have pasted since last session
Relative Ethics in Counseling: Consult, Consult, Consult
1) Consult ethical code
2) Consult colleagues
3) Consult legal counsel
4) NEVER have RR with CL’s, CL’s loved ones, or CL’s family

Discovering CL’s resources and strengths (finding exceptions to the problem)

Looking at meaning in life
We need both positive and negative emotions
1) If the right side of the brain (negative emotions) is damaged it=maniac episodes, impulsiveness, spiral out of control
2) If the left side is damaged (positive emotions)= depressed and full of negative emotions
