Chapter 27.1-27.4 Quiz Flashcards
List the two primary sex organs and their function
Testes and ovaries. They produce gametes (sperm and ova) and secrete steroid sex hormones.
What is the male sex hormone?
Androgens
What is the female sex hormone?
Estrogen and progesterone
What is the function of the testes?
Sperm producing male gonads (primary sex organ)
List 3 accessory sex glands
Seminal glands, prostate, bulbo-urethral glands
How is sperm delivered to the body?
Epididymis, ductus deferens, ejaculatory duct and urethra
Seminiferous tubules have what sort of lining?
Thick stratified epithelium surrounding central-fluid containing lumen.
Epithelium contains what?
Spheroid spermatogenic cells (sperm forming cells)
Sperm is conveyed from seminiferous tubules to straight tubule. What is the flow?
Rete testis -> efferent ductules -> epididymis.
Where is sperm stored?
The tail of the epididymis until ejaculation
What is the function of interstitial endocrine cells?
Produces androgens such as testosterone and secretes it into the interstitial fluid.
What is the prepuce?
Foreskin. Cuff of loose skin covering glans
What are the four parts of the male duct system and what is the function?
Epididymis, ductus deferens, ejaculatory duct, urethra. Carry sperm from the testes outward
Where are the seminal glands located?
Posterior bladder surface
What muscle type do the seminal glands contain?
Smooth muscle that contracts during ejaculation
Duct of seminal gland joins _____ _____ to form ______ ______
Ductus deferens. Ejaculatory duct.
Seminal glands function
Secrete fructose (energy for sperm)
Where is the prostate located?
Encircles urethra inferior to bladder
What type of muscle does that prostate have and what is it’s function?
Smooth muscle that contracts during ejaculation, secretes milky slightly acidic fluid
What is benign prostatic hyperplasia?
Enlarged prostate. Distorts urethra and can be treated with surgery, balloon compression, microwaves or drugs to shrink prostate, radio-frequency radiation
Prostate cancer facts and what to test for and treatments
Second most common cause of cancer death in males. Test the PSA levels. Treated with surgery and sometimes radiation, castration, drugs
Bulbo-urethral glands location and function
Pea-sized glands inferior to prostate. Produce thick, clear mucus
How much semen is ejaculated and how many sperm per mL
2-5 ml semen are ejaculated, 20-150 million sperm/ml.
