CHAPTER 27 EXAM Flashcards
Where does LH bind and what does it effect in males?
Luteinizing hormone. Binds to interstitial endocrine cells and secretes testosterone. Increase in test levels trigger spermatogenesis. `
What does LH effect in females?
Rising levels of LH cause the ovary wall to rupture, expelling secondary oocytes
What does FH effect in males?
Follicle stimulating hormone stimulates spermatogenesis indirectly by stimulating systems to release androgen binding protein.
What does FH effect in females?
During the follicular phase, several vesicular follicles are stimulated to grow. Triggered by rising levels of FSH. Drops around middle of follicular phase
What does GnRH stand for, what releases it, and what does it secrete?
Gonadotropin releasing hormone. Released by anterior pituitary gland. Secretes FSH and LH.
What is the purpose of estrogen?
Hormone that promotes the development of female characteristics. Maintenance of reproductive health.
What is the purpose of progesterone?
Menstrual cycle regulation.
Mammary glands are stimulated by what hormone in preparation for lactation?
Progesterone
What does inhibin do?
Stops secretion of FSH in the male
Testing information for prostate cancer and what to test?
Digital exam screening. Check PSA levels. Biopsy if abnormal
Testing information for breast cancer
Early detection via self examination and mammography. Should get screened every year once 40+
The path of sperm
Epididymis, duct deferens, ejaculatory duct, urethra
Female and male gonads
Ovaries (produce female gametes, secrete female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone). Testes (sperm producing)
Female internal structures
Uterus, fallopian tubes, eggs, vagina
Female external structures
Labia majora, mons pubis, labia minora
Male internal structures
Testes, epididymis, duct deferens, seminal veiscles, prostate gland, bulbourethral glands, ejaculatory duct
Male external structures
Prepuce, penis, scrotum, urethra
What is the proper sequence of follicular development?
Primorial, primary, secondary, vesicular
Site of fertilization
Uterine tubes also called fallopian tubs receive ovulated oocyte and are the usual site.
Which hormones are gonadotropins and what structures secrete these?
FSH and LH. Anterior pituitary
Facts about genital herpes
Caused by HSV-2, possiby 1/4 to 1/2 American adults carry this virus. Acyclovir and other antiviral drugs can be used to treat
Facts about genital warts
Caused by HPV. 6.2mill cases each year, 80% of cases of invasive cervical cancer are linked to HPV. Most strains do not cause cancer.
Facts about trichomoniasis
Most common protozoan infection. 7.4mill cases each year. Yellow-green vaginal discharge with strong odor, some patients can be symptomless.
Facts about chlamydia
Most common bacterial STI in US. Can be contracted from birth canal by newborns. Symptoms are urethritis, discharge, painful intercourse, 80% of women have no symptoms. Treatment - tetracycline
Facts about syphilis
Bacterial infection transmitted sexually or congenitally. 2-3 weeks then painless chancre appears at site of infection. Disappears within a few weeks.
Facts about gonorrhea
Bacterial infection of mucosae of reproductive and urinary tracts
