Chapter 27 Flashcards
What is an amine
An amine is an ammonia derivative there are two types
An aliphatic amine has a nitrogen atom attached to at least one straight or branched carbon chain
An aromatic amine has a nitrogen atom attached to an aromatic ring
What is the difference between a primary secondary and tertiary amine
Primary is attached to one one-carbon secondary attach tutu and tertiary attached to 3
How do you name an amine
If it’s at the end of a chain add a mean to the end of the alkyl chain EG ethyl amine
If it’s on any other carbon use the prefix amino and the carbon number
Use di/Tri prefixes to indicate the number of amine groups
Amine + acid
Draw example
Amine + acid→ salt
How do you prepare a primary amine
Draw example
Ammonia + halo alkane→ amine + ammonium halide
Conditions- ethanolic ammonia
How can you prepare a secondary or tertiary amine
Draw example
Primary a name + halo alkane→secondary amine + ammonium halide
Conditions- ethanolic ammonia
How do you prepare an aromatic amine
Draw example
Reduce a nitroarene with 6{H} with tin and HCL then NaOH
What is an amino acid
An amino acid is an organic compound containing both amine and carboxylic acid groups attached to the same carbon
Amino acid + acid
Draw example
Amino acid + acid →salt
Amino acid + alkali draw example
Amino acid + alkali = salt + water
Conditions- sulfuric acid catalyst
Amino acid + alcohol draw example
Amino acid + alcohol = ester + water
Conditions: sulfuric acid catalyst
What is an amide
a molecule with the functional group -CONH2
Draw primary and secondary amide
Checking notes
What is an optical isomer
An optical isomer is a type of stereoisomer in molecules with a chiral centre which leads to the two non-superimposable mirror image structures known as enantiomers
What is a chiral carbon
Chiral carbon is an atom attached to four different atoms or groups of atoms
