Chapter 2 Flashcards
Atoms, ions and compounds
What is relative atomic mass? (Ar)
Relative atomic mass is the weighted mean mass of an atom of an element compared to 1/12 of the mass of an atom of carbon-12
What is relative isotopic mass?
Relative isotopic mass is the mass of an atom of an isotope compared with 1/12 of the mass of an atom of carbon-12
What does the height of each peak on a mass spectrometry graph represent?
The height of each peak represents the relative isotopic abundance
What is relative isotopic abundance?
Relative isotopic abundance is the percentage of that particular isotope that occurs in nature
How do you work out m/z- the mass to charge ratio?
m/z= relative mass of ion /relative charge of ion
What is the mass to charge ratio equivalent to in most cases?
The mass to charge ratio is equivalent to the relative isotopic mass when the ion has one positive charge
How do you find the relative atomic mass?
To find the relative atomic mass
1) multiply each relative isotopic mass by its relative isotopic abundance
2) divide by the sum of the isotopic abundances
What is relative molecular mass
Relative molecular mass is used when referring to simple molecules
What is relative formula mass
Relative formula mass is used when referring to giant covalent or ionic compounds
