Chapter 23: Musculoskeletal Flashcards
effusion
excess joint fluid
bursae
tendons
fracture
a break in a bone
dislocation
complete loss of contact between the two bones in a joint
subluxation
partial dislocation
two bones in a joint stay in contact, but no longer aligned
contracture
shortening of a muscle leading to limited ROM of joint
ankylosis
stiffness or fixation of a joint
inflammation
signaled by warmth and tenderness
palpable fluid
abnormal finding of a joint
articular disease
-inside the joint capsule, like arthritis
-swelling and tenderness around the whole joint
-all planes of ROM are limited
extra-curricular disease
-injury to a specific tendon, ligament, nerve
-affects active and voluntary motion
-swelling and tenderness to one spot in the joint
-affects only certain planes of ROM
crepitation
crunching sound with movement, occurs with RA
TMJ
crepitus and pain when chewing, decreased ROM, tenderness with palpation
humerus
upper arm bone
ulna
pinky side of forearm bone
olecranon
end of the ulna (at the elbow)
epicondyle
end of the humerus (at the elbow)
subcutaneous nodules
raised, firm, and nontender
occur with RA
osteopenia
a loss of bone mineral density (BMD) that weakens bones
rheumatoid arthritis
-bilateral swelling and tenderness
-tender metacarpophalangeal joints
ganglion cyst
localized swelling in wrist
osteoarthritis
-Heberden and Bouchard nodules are hard and nontender
-irregular bony margins
carpal tunnel syndrome
-numbness and burning with the Phalen test (hands back to back while flexing wrists 90 degrees)
-positive Tinel sign
Tinel sign
percussing nerve at the wrist
positive Tinel sign
with carpal tunnel syndrome, percussion of nerve along the wrist causes burning and tingling
positive Thomas test
of the hip, tests for tightness of the iliopsoas
Genu varum
bowlegs, can be caused by nutritional rickets
Genu valgum
-knock-knees
-may be caused by osteomyelitis, rickets, or kidney failure
bulge sign
occurs with small amounts of effusion from fluid flowing across the joint, like with swelling in the suprapatellar pouch
paresis
weakness of muscles
hemiplegia
spastic or flaccid paralysis of one side (right or left)
paraplegia
symmetric paralysis of both lower extremities
quadriplegia
paralysis in all four extremities
hiccup
myoclonus of diaphragm
grand mal seizures
severe myoclonic jerks
fasciculation
rapid twitching of a muscle without moving the limb
osteoblasts
form new bone, have estrogen receptors
kyphosis
increase in the thoracic curve, seen in aging adults
lordosis
seen in pregnant women
arthropathy
disease of the joints
