Chapter 23: Antecedent Interventions Flashcards
a behavior change strategy that manipulates contingency-independent antecedent stimuli (motivating operations) (SEE NCR, high p request sequence, FCT. CONTRAST with antecedent control - a behavior change intervention that manipulates contingency-dependent consequence events to affect stimulus control)
Antecedent Intervention
a metaphor to describe a rate of responding and its resistance to change following an alteration in reinforcement conditions. The momentum metaphor has also been used to describe the effects produced by the high p request sequence.
Behavioral momentum
a schedule for the delivery of non-contingent stimuli in which a time interval remains the same from one delivery to the next.
Fixed-time schedule (FT)-
an antecedent intervention in which appropriate communicative behavior is taught as a replacement behavior for problem behavior usually evoked by an establishing operation, involves differential reinforcement of alternative behavior (DRA)
Functional Communication Training (FCT
an antecedent intervention in which two to five easy tasks with a known history of learner compliance (the high p requests) are presented in quick succession immediately before request the target task. The low p request. Also called interspersed requests pretask requests or behavioral momentum
High probability (high p) request sequence
a procedure in which stimuli with known reinforcing properties are present on fixed time (FT) or variable time (VT) schedules completely independent of behavior. Often used as an antecedent intervention to reduce problem behavior
Noncontingent reinforcement (NCR)
a schedule for the delivery of noncontingent stimuli in which the interval of time from one delivery to the next randomly varies around a given time. For example, on a VT 1 minute schedule the delivery to delivery interval might range from 5 seconds to 2 minutes but the average interval would be 1 minute
Variable time schedule
