chapter 2.2 Flashcards
neurons
cell that communicate and sensory with the nervous sytem
interneurons
connect only to nearby nuerons not all the body
motor neurons
carry messages to your brain from muscles
sensory neurons
carry information to your brain from senses (taste, touch, smell, etc)
reflex
automatic muscles response
cell body
performs basic activities
axon
part of neuron that carries information to other neurons
axon terminals
small branches at end of axon that connect with end of neurons
dendrites
branches at the end of neuron that receive signals from other neurons
synapse
a gap between two connecting neurons
neurotransmitters
chemical messengers that travel across synapses from one neuron to the next
endorphins
neurotransmitters that are involved with reducing pain and increasing pleasure
dopamine
influences brain’s reward system and body’s movement
serotonin
influences mood and sleep and appetite.
epinephrine(adrenaline)
flight or fight
