Chapter 21 - Elements & Compounds Flashcards
What is compound?
2 or more different chemically combined elements in set ratios e.g. Magnesium oxide
What colour is iron? Is it attracted to a magnet?
Iron is grey. It is attracted to a magnet.
What colour is sulphur? Is it attracted to a magnet?
Sulphur is yellow. It is not attracted to a magnet.
What compound is formed when iron and sulphur are chemically combined?
Iron sulphide (FeS)
What colour is iron sulphide? Is it attracted to a magnet?
Iron sulphide is black. It is not attracted to a magnet.
What is a mixture?
2 or more substances mingled together but not chemically combined e.g. Air
What is a diluted solution?
A small amount of solute in a large amount of solvent.
What is a concentrated solution?
A large amount of solute in a small amount of solvent.
What is a saturated solution?
A solution with as much solute dissolved in the solvent as possible at a given temperature.
What is crystallisation?
The formation of crystals when a hot saturated solution is allowed to cool or the solvent is evaporated from the solution.
What is an element?
A substance that cannot be split into simpler substances by chemical means e.g. Silver
