Chapter 11 - The Sensory And Nervous System Flashcards
Name the 5 sensory organs and what they sense.
1) The eye - Light
2) The ear - Vibrations
3) The nose - Chemicals in solution
4) The tongue - Chemicals in solution
5) The skin - Heat, Pressure & Pain
What is the role of the iris?
The iris controls the amount of light let into the eye.
What is the role of the lens?
To focus light onto the retina
What is the role of the optic nerve?
To carry nerve impulses from the eye to the brain.
What is the role of the pupil?
To let light enter the eye
What is the role of the retina?
It has light receptor cells which detect light.
What is the role of the ciliary muscles?
To change the shape of the lens.
What is the role of the cornea?
To bend the light as it lets it into the eye.
What is the nervous system made up of?
1) The central nervous system
2) The nerves
What is the CNS made up of?
The brain and the spinal cord
What is the role of the brain?
The brain processes information from sensory organs and sends a response to the muscles and glands. The brain is also responsible for our memory, intelligence and emotions.
What part of the brain controls memory and emotions?
The limbic system
What is a stimulus?
Something which provokes a response e.g. Heat
What is the role of the spinal cord?
It relays the information to the brain from the sensory organs and to the muscles and glands from the brain.
What is the difference between a motor nerve and a sensory nerve?
A sensory nerve carries information to the brain from the sensory organs.
A motor nerve carries nerve impulses from the brain to muscles and glands.
