Chapter 2: Workforce Safety and Wellness Flashcards
Infectious disease vs communicable disease
-Infectious: Spread of harmful oranisms within body
-Communicable: Spread from one species to another
Pathogen
Microorganism that is capable of causing disease in a susceptible host
Contamination
Presence of pathogen or foreign bodies in water, dressings, food
Routes of transmission
Transmission is how disease is spread
-Direct contact: organism is moved
from one to another
-Indirect: Through an object
-Blood born pathogen: microorganism that are present in human blood
-HIV: Transfer via sexual intercourse
-Airbone: spread through droplets or dust
PPE
-Hand washing
-Gloves
-Eye pro and face shields
-Gowns
-Mask and respirators
Immunizations/Immunity
-Lifelong: Measles, mumps, hep A, hep B
-Partial: First infection is unlikely to occur but ilness may develop from dormant germs
-None: Exposure confers no protection from further reinfection
-Other/unkown: Flu/Covid-19, some things are known but difficult to develop (vaccines), some are unkown completely
Exposure
-Siutation where there has been contact with blood, body fluids
-No antibodies = recieve 3 series of Hep B immunoglobulin injections
-Turn over care, clean area, rinse eyes, activate infectious control plan, complete exposure report
Sign vs Symptom
-Signs (See)
-Symptoms (Feel)
Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)
-Developed for acute stress situations
Occupational Health and Safety Health Administration (OSHA)
-Guidelines for reducing hazards in the workplace
-CDC established: Standard precautions, infection control
US DOT Handbook
Guidebook that lists many hazardous materials and proper scene control
Acute vs Delayed vs Cumulative Stress
Acute- Instantaneous
Delayed- Manifest after the stressor
Cumulative- Exposed to prolonged stress
