2 Responsibilities for canine handler
Must be willing to care for the canine 24 hours a day
Respond to call outs during other than regularly scheduled shift hours

Utilizing an arm sleeve
Utilizing a body suit

9 K9 Officer Responsibilities
Ensure K9 is kept in good physical condition
Provide quarterly training (Area)
Training scenarios during work shift
Report any change or discrepancy in the performance of the K9 to the DCS/DMT
Record all training and activity on a CHP 257
Train daily and weekly as required, attend monthly evals and certify annually
Ensure all searches are in compliance with law and Policy
Clean/Disinfect kennel and vehicle weekly
Provide 24 hour care for K9
Control of K9 while 10-8
Maintain proper control at all times
Shall not be left unattended when in contact w/ public, departmental personnel or allied agency members
While on duty K9 shall be on leash unless performing in a manner it was trained
Shall be on a leash when conducting a search on freeway, highway or roadway
Off Duty Status for canine
Shall be kenneled or under direct supervision of CO. Or locked up with padlock
K9’s are classified as state “biological” equipment and their use is restricted to official duties or other approved activities
Transportation of K9
While conducting state business, K9 shall be transported in a K9 PV
Shall remain in the rear
If left unattended shall have water. Make sure PV is locked. Appropriate temp

Inside and outside of PV shall display professional image
Shall sanitize PV weekly to ensure control of fleas and parasites
Shall perform test of K9,s Alert System
Shall keep PV at residence
Shall be garaged
K9 Alert System
All PV’s shall be equipped
Shall be tested at beginning of each shift
Shall not be disabled

Level I Notifications
Received by CO
Will be sent every 2 minutes until corrected
If not corrected w/in 2 minutes, alert will be sent to DCS or DMT’s
Temperature Alert
Triggered if temp reaches 85 degrees
Dog Reminder Alert
Activates when car is turned off
Injury to K9 Officer
If K9 is unsecured, untrained officers shall not approach CO unless :
Given clearance from CO
or
When the K9 is secured
