Chapter 2 - Matter And Change Flashcards
Mass
a coherent, typically large body of matter with no definite shape
Extensive property
extensive property is a property that changes when the size of the sample changes
Intensive property
bulk property, meaning that it is a physical property of a system that does not depend on the system size or the amount of material in the system
Substance
particular kind of matter with uniform properties
Physical change
changes affecting the form of a chemical substance, but not its chemical composition
Homogeneous Mixture
mixture which has uniform composition and properties throughout
Heterogenous mixture
combination of two or more pure substances in which the original substances retain their chemical properties
Filtration
the action or process of filtering something
Distillation
the action of purifying a liquid by a process of heating and cooling
Element
each of more than one hundred substances that cannot be chemically interconverted or broken down into simpler substances and are primary constituents of matter
Compound
a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements; a mixture
Chemical change
any change that results in the formation of new chemical substances
Precipitate
cause (a substance) to be deposited in solid form from a solution
Law of Conservation of Mass
Matter cannot be destroyed or created
