Chapter 10 Flashcards
Mole
the SI unit of amount of substance, equal to the quantity containing as many elementary units as there are atoms in 0.012 kg of carbon-12.
Avogadro’s number
number of units in one mole of any substance (defined as its molecular weight in grams), equal to 6.022 × 10^23
Molar Mass
physical property defined as the mass of a given substance (chemical element or chemical compound) divided by the amount of substance.
Empirical formula
simplest positive integer ratio of atoms present in a compound
Molecular formula
a formula giving the number of atoms of each of the elements present in one molecule of a specific compound.
Hydrates
a compound, typically a crystalline one, in which water molecules are chemically bound to another compound or an element.
