Chapter 2 Matter Flashcards
Chemistry
The scientific study of composition, structure, and the properties of matter and the changes of matter.
Matter
Everything that has mass and takes up space.
Element
A substance that can’t be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
Atom
The smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element.
Compound
A substance made of atoms of two or more different elements that combined chemically .
Molecule
The smallest unit of a substance that keeps all the physical and chemical properties of that substance.
Chemical Formula
A combination of chemical symbols and numbers to represent a substance.
Pure Substance
A sample of matter, single element or single compound, that has definite chemical and physical properties.
Heterogeneous Mixture
Substances are not mixed uniformly and are not evenly distributed.
Homogeneous Mixture
Substances are evenly distributed, and the mixture is the same throughout.
Miscible
Substances that can be mixed.
Immiscible
Substances that can’t be mixed.
