Chapter 2, Equilibria Flashcards
Does Kc have to be calculated?
Yes it does and it can have no units.
What is the Kc equation?
Kc= conc of products
Conc of reactants
The larger the value of Kc…
The more products in the equilibrium mixture.
The value of Kc is dependant on…
Temperature.
What DOESN’T effect Kc?
A catalyst.
3 steps for calculating equilibrium.
- Initial conc
- Change on conc
- Equilibrium
Effect of a change in concentration…
If the concentration of either reactant is increased, the equilibrium moves right.
If the concentration of either product is increased, the equilibrium moves left.
Kc remains unchanged.
Effect of a change in temperature… (If the forward reaction is exothermic)
An increase in temp will shift the equilibrium to the left, which decreases the yield, vice versa if temp was decreased.
Effect of a change in temperature… (If the forward reaction is exothermic)
An increase in temp will shift the equilibrium to the right, which increases the yield, vice versa if temp was decreased.
Effect on an addition of a catalyst…
Has NO effect on equilibrium
Has NO effect on Kc
ONLY effects the RATE of which equilibrium is reached.
What makes chloroethanoic acid stronger ethanoic acid?
Chlorine is more electronegative and therefore withdraws more electron making the O-H bond more polar/weaker.
