Chapter 2 - Engine Oil Flashcards
What is the purpose of the engine lubricating system?
Delivers filtered oil under pressure to lubricate the bearings and gears of the engine, and give indications to the crew
How many chip dectectors are there?
Two
What 7 components make up the engine oil system?
Oil reservoir Pump and filter support block Electrical magnetic plugs Scavenge strainers Cooling unit Centrifugal breather Indicating devices
How much oil can the reservoir hold?
4.3L
What 4 components are contained in the pump and filter support block?
Filter
Oil filter indication
Oil pressure and temp transmitter
Oil pumps
When does the separate bypass valve open at?
At a differential pressure of 500kPa
When does the oil filter indication pop?
Pre-blockage (close to blocking)
At a differential pressure of 250kPa.
(has a thermal lock below 50degrees Celsius)
During start what warning pops if the oil pressure to NG relationship is out of limits?
A ‘#1/2 oil press’ warning on the CAS window
How many oil pumps are there?
3 Gerotor oil pumps
1 pressure
2 Scavenge (1 recovers oil from the reduction gearbox sump, 1 from the rear bearing drain)
How many electric magnetic plugs are there?
2 intotal upstream of the scavenger pump, 1 on the oil pump and filter support block, 1 below the combustion chamber casing
What indication pops up when the metal particle bridges the gap on the electric magnetic plug?
1/2 OIL CHIP on the cas
What does the thermostatic bypass valve do?
Prevents oil from going to the cooler when the temp of the oil is below 54degrees cel
Where are the oil coolers located?
Two oil coolers mounted on either side of the main transmission
Are the oil cooling circuits seperate?
Yes the engine cooling unit is separate from the transmission cooling
