Chapter 2 chemistry essay Flashcards
Three types of bonds
- Covalent
- Ionic
- Weak chemical bonds
Covalent bond types and explain
nonpolar: equal sharing of valence electrons
polar: unequal sharing of electrons
What happens in a polar covalent bond
There is electronegativity, or the measure of the tendancy of an atom to attract an electron
What is an ionic bond
one atom strips another of valence electrons
What is created through ionic bonds
Cations: negatively charged atoms
Anoins: positively charged atoms
Salts: ionic compond that results from acid base neautralization reaction
Types of weak chemical bonds and define
Hydrogen bonds: when one atom already bonded to an electronegative atom is attracted to another electrongeative atom
Van de waals interactions: molecules and atoms in close proximity can be attracted by fleeting charge difference
