chapter 2 Flashcards
Describe the 3 stages of the cell cycle
Stage 1) Replication of DNA to form two copies of each chromosome and synthesis of new sub-cellular structures
Stage 2) mitosis (nucleus divides)
Stage 3) cell divides in 2
why is mitotic cell division important (3)
in growth, repair and development of multicellular organisms
what occurs in mitosis
one set of chromosome is pulled to each end of the cell and the nucleus divides
where does mitosis take place in plants
in the meristems in shoot and root tips
what replaces dead or dying cells in the body
adult stem cells
definition of stem cells
they can be cloned and made to differentiate into many different type of cells.
what can stem cells treat (2)
paralysis, diabetes
what can stem cells from meristems in plants be used to do (2)
used to produce new plant clones quickly and economically
Benefits of embryonic stem cells (2)
1) able to help conditions like diabetes
2) it isn’t rejected from the patient body
Downsides to the use of embryonic stem cells
The use of stem cells has potential risks and some people have ethical or religious objections
