Chapter 10 Flashcards
Define Homeostasis
Homeostasis is the regulation of internal conditions of a cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions for function
What’s in the CNS
brain and spinal cord
Differences between Nervous System and Hormone System
nervous system
quicker, shorter and more specific reactions
hormone system
longer lasting, longer reaction time and operates in a larger area
Draw a sensory neurone versus a motor neurone
sensory neurone has a cell body half way down the neurone
motor neurone has a cell body at the end of the neurone
Reflex Arc Pathway
stimulus => receptor => sensory neurone => synapse => CNS => motor neurone => effector
What happens at a synapse
Synapses are tiny regions of empty space through which nerve cells are able to transmit information to other cells. This occurs when a nerve impulse reaches the terminal point of a neuron, stimulating the nerve cell and causing the release of neurotransmitter molecules
Give 3 examples of new technology for the eye
contact lenses
- instead of glasses - more practical
- :( can cause eye infection
laser eye surgery
- myopia - you reduce thickness of cornea so it refracts less
- hyperopia - change curve of cornea so it refracts more
replacement lenses
- add or replace with another lens
- :( damage retina // if you leave the natural one there, it could get infected + you can develop cataracts
What changes happen in eye when you look at something close
ciliary muscles contract
suspensory ligaments relax
What is accommodation
the process of changing the shape of the lens of the eye to focus on near or distant objects.
What changes happen in eye when you look at something distant
suspensory ligaments contract
ciliary muscles relax
What happens to eye if light intensity is high
radial muscles relax
circular muscles contract
What happens to eye if light intensity is low
radial muscles contract
circular muscles relax
label eye
lens, cornea, pupil, iris, suspensory ligament, ciliary muscle, retina, sclera, optic nerve
where is a) cerebellum b) cerebral Cortex c) medulla
a) back of head
b) top of head
c) infront of cerebellum
what does the medulla do
controls unconscious activities
