Chapter 19 Flashcards
What are hox genes
Hox genes are genes responsible for the development of body plans
What are the features of hox genes
Hox genes have highly conserved parts in plants animals and fungi called homeobox sequences this means body plan development is similar in each and has not been affected by evolution
How do hox genes control development
Homeobox sequence codes for a homeodomain protein
It binds to sites on DNA of developmental genes as a transcription factor
This activates/represses transcription which alters proteins involved in body plan development
What is apoptosis
Apoptosis is programmed cell death
Cell components are broken down by enzymes
The cell shrinks and breaks into fragments
These are engulfed by phagocytes
