Chapter 17 Flashcards
What is chromatin remodelling
Remodeling complexes bind to DNA and reposition the nucleosomes
What is histone methylation
Methyl groups either added by methyltransferases, or removed by demethylases
What is histone acetylation
Acetyl groups either added by acetyltransferases or removed by deacetylases
What effect does methylation typically have on transcription?
Decreases it
What effect does acetylation typically have on transcription?
Increases it by destabilizing chromatin structure
What are enhancers?
DNA sequences that stimulate transcription from a distance away from promoter
What are insulators
DNA sequences that block the effects of enhancers
What is NELF?
Protein that binds to RNA polymerase, causing it to stall after initiation
What is P-Telf?
Phosphorylates NELF, relieves stalling
What are response elements?
Sequences that are activated under certain stimuli
Process of RNA Degradation
Removal of 5’ cap, 5’ to 3’ degradation
RNA interference is accomplished by?
miRNA and siRNA
What part of RNA does miRNA and siRNA bind to?
3’ UTR
