chapter 17 Flashcards
scientists classify materials as either magnetically hard or magnetically soft.
Iron is a soft magnetic material: easily magnetized, and tends to lose its magnetic properties easily
Hard magnetic materials
cobalt, nickel. Hard to magnetize. don’t lose their magnetic properties easily.
magnetic pole
one of two points such as the ends of a magnet that have opposition magneticc qualities.
solenoid
a coil of wire with an electric current in it. Has a north and south pole, just like a magnet.
electromagnet
a coil that has a soft iron core and that acts as a magnet when an electric current is in the coil. the iron core increases the strength of the magnetic field of the coil, which without the core is a solenoid
galvanometer
an instrument that detects, measures and determines the direction of a small electric current
electromagnetic induction
the process of creating a current in a circuit by changing a magnetic field
transformer
magnetic field produced by a primary coil induces a current in a secondary coil. the voltage across the secondary coil is proportional to the number of turns it has relative to the number of turns in the primary coils
