John Hancock

- Hancock was from Massachusetts
- Hancock thought he was going to be General
- He was very surprised when Washington was appointed general
- Was president of the second continental congress
- When Hancock signed the Declaration of Independence he signed it extra big so the king wouldn’t have to put on his reading glasses to see it
- John Hancock was also the first to sign the Declaration of Independence
- the saying your signature is a John Hancock comes from when he signed the Declaration of Independence

- Over six feet tall, big nones, muscular and ver very strong
- Was very modest
- Had grey blue eyes, auburn hair, and huge hands and feet
- He loved to dance, and he dressed with care
- John Adams wife wrote a poem about him
- John Adams was always jealous of him
- Was from Virginia
- Was a very good officer
- Had many great talents and his universal character would command the respect of America and unite the colonies better than any other person alive
- Washington was elected general unanimously
- Washington accepted the position but required he not get paid
- Washington was a very humble man
- Washington was willing to do what was right despite what people might think of him
- He said “from the day I enter upon the command of the American armies, i date my fall, and the ruin of my reputation.”
- Was well loved by the people

The Olive Branch Petition

- The olive branch petition was sent to the king from the continental congress asking for one last chance to patch things up with England
- The King rebuffed the offer and didn’t even look at it
- The olive branch is a form of peace, this is why the congress sent it to the king
- The colonists asked the King to consider their problems but the king didn’t even read the petition
- After the king rejected the olive branch the revolution had begun
