Required to pay for an official stamp or seal whenever they bought paper items such as newspapers pamphlets, licenses, legal documents, playing cards
Tax collectors sold stamps and turned over proceeds to British government
Colonists who refused to buy stamps could be tried
Colonists saw Stamp Act as the first law of Parliament that directly taxed the colonists, not just on trade goods, but to raise money
Many were upset even loyalists

  • It was a nasty thing to do, but the King and Parliament got the idea
