Boston Massacre

A
  • Took place in Boston on March 5, 1770 in front of the Boston Custom House
  • Paul Revere + Sam Adams made it sound like it was the british’s fault by using propaganda
  • 5 people died and 7 people were wounded
  • The massacre was an accident
  • there was a fight between the colonists and a soldier and the soldier called for help
  • one of the soldiers claimed he heard the word fire and shot his gun into the middle of the crowd, all the other soldiers panicked and fired as well
  • Should not be called a Massacre
  • John Adams defended the soldier in trial and only 2 were found guilty and their thumbs were branded with and “M” for manslaughter

  • one of the colonies best lawyers
  • solid citizen
  • helped lead revolution
  • alway did what he thought was fair
  • defended the 8 british soldiers from the Boston massacre (2 guilty)
  • self government, wanted a government based on fair play

Paul Revere

A
  • silver smith
  • dedicated patriot
  • dentist, printer, good horseback rider, a friend of Sam Adams
  • made famous engraving of Boston Massacre, but it was from a patriots point of view
  • In April 1775, he had his famous ride
  • was supposed to get from Boston to Concord, but got caught outside of Lexington (he also had 2 other men helping him)
  • He told everyone in town, the redcoats were coming and that they wanted to take the storage of the Patriot’s weapons

  • Started by Sam Adams
  • they were a group of men who wrote back in forth between colonies
  • the men helped each other with their problems
  • Soon became a congress, the first continental congress
  • there were 13 members one from each colony

  • Americans who supported the king were called loyalists because they remained loyal to the existing government
  • Some were called Tories
  • Tory political party believed the king should keep firm control over the colonies

  • Patriots were Americans who wanted to be free from the British rule
  • some where called Whigs
  • Whigs were an English political party who mostly believed that the colonies should be able to govern themselves

First Continental Congress

A
  • Started with the Committees of Correspondence and formed into the first Continental Congress
  • They first met in 1774 in Philadelphia, which was America’s leading city at the time
  • Each colony except Georgia, sent one representative or delegate to meet
  • Talked about the stamp act and they made a plan to not buy any goods from the British
  • they past 10 resolutions in the their meeting

  • Meaning of the word: Taking a small thing and changing it around to make people care and take it over the top
  • Boston Massacre
  • Made the British soldiers look bad
  • The Boston Massacre turned colonists against British soldiers + the king
  • Paul Revere and Sam Adams created the drawing and term, they knew it would make a good propaganda
  • it helped start war
