Habeas Corpus

A

-translated to have the body (latin)
habeas=have; corpus= body
-in the old days police could arrest anyone without a reason or arrest the wrong person
-could be forgotten in jail or die without even knowing what you have done wrong
-Habeas Corpus gave you the power to ask the judge what were you were being arrested for
-ask, “writ of habeas corpus.”
-judge would let you free if it is a bad reason for what you were being issued to

  • one of the worlds greatest documents of freedom
  • king John used to be able to take land and money from the people without reasoning
  • After king John signed t he Magna Carta, no king after him was able to do whatever they wanted
