Deist is a belief in the existence of a supreme being, specifically of a creator who does not intervene in the universe
-ran away and went to sea (did not work out)
-tried many jobs was never successful
-grocer, sailor, school teacher, tobacco seller, and corset maker
-very intelligent
-avid reader
-After he met Ben Franklin in London, he wanted to move to america
-Wrote a pamphlet called Common Sense
-deep beliefs
-enlisted in the Continental army
-was not rich, gave 3rd of salary to help Washington’s army
-humble

  • Sam Adams organized/ started this group
  • groups of prominent citizens who wrote back and forth between colonies and helped each other with problems
  • As a result of writing the letters the leaders come together and realize they have much in common
  • they come together as one and are unified

  • a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine
  • written because the colonists were beginning to separate from England but they kept second guessing themselves and they were not sure what to do
  • Thomas Paine wanted the colonists to realize all the terrible things the british have done to them and they wanted to be logical on their decision
  • A whole lot of copies of Common Sense were sold in a very short time
